Why Pool Edge Type Changes an Automatic Cover Quote
See how skimmer and overflow pool edges affect automatic cover tracks, roller positions, civil interfaces and the drawings suppliers need.

Two pools can share the same waterline dimensions and still need different automatic cover systems. The difference often sits at the edge, where the track, water path, grating and roller detail meet.
If a supplier quotes from length and width alone, the number may be quick but it is not ready for a contractor's client proposal. Send one edge section early and make the water-level system explicit.
The descriptions below cover common arrangements. The actual structure, finishes and supplier system determine what can be built.
What changes on a skimmer pool
A skimmer pool holds its operating water level below the coping and draws surface water through wall openings. The dry edge above the water can provide space for certain track and fixing details.
That does not make every skimmer pool a standard installation. Coping overhang, wall finish, steps, ladders, pool shape and roller access still need review.
What changes on an overflow pool
An overflow or deck-level pool passes water over one or more edges into a channel, gutter or perimeter system. The cover arrangement must preserve that water path and coordinate with the grating and deck finish.
Ask:
- Can the track sit without blocking the channel?
- Is there space for a roller pit, and how would it drain?
- How does a lid or bench meet the grating?
- Can the mechanism be reached after finishes are complete?
- Does an infinity edge or balance-system detail add another constraint?
These questions belong in the early cover review because some answers affect civil work, not only the supplied mechanism.
Where the quotation changes
Track and fixing
A dry skimmer edge may allow a simpler interface. Overflow details often need project-specific coordination. The supplier should price the section on your drawing, not the pool category alone.
Roller position
The roller may be recessed, enclosed in a bench or placed above ground. Structure, access and the visual brief will narrow the choice. The automatic cover pricing guide explains how concealment affects both equipment and civil scope.
New build or retrofit
On a new pool, the team can coordinate a pit, drainage and cable routes before finishes. On an operating pool, the solution must respect existing waterproofing, structure and deck. The retrofit cover guide provides a workflow when no CAD drawing is available.
Slat and span
The edge type does not select the slat material. Span, sun, water treatment and the offered profile still matter. Compare them with the PVC and polycarbonate slat guide.
The drawing package can stay simple
Show a dimensioned waterline plan and the cover travel direction. Add the edge section with structure, finishes, water level and deck level. For an overflow pool, include the channel, grating and water path.
Then mark the preferred roller end, motor side and access space. Add steps, ladders, handrails and other obstructions. State whether the pool is new or existing, and include photos for any built condition.
The 12-point automatic cover drawing checklist and measurement guide help your site team collect the details in one pass.
We use the first review to mark missing interfaces and coordinate an indicative configuration with the China-side supplier. The appointed contractor and engineer own the final site dimensions, structural modification, drainage, waterproofing, electrical design, installation and local approval.
Add the plan and edge section to WhatsApp. For an existing pool, include one wide image and two close edge photos. That is usually enough to identify the next measurements without starting another long supplier chat.
